Basic Properties
After installing Maya, you will see this initial screen:
Oops… That screen is not ready yet.
Obviously, the first thing to do is to create a task. However, before that, you must understand some basic concepts of how a task is composed (and where they will be organized). The first concept is properties.
You can find a complete list of them by clicking here.
For now, we will focus only on the essential ones for you to create your first tasks.
Style
The concept of style is abstract, but simple. It is basically a separator for you to have a quick understanding of the essence of a task. The two main styles are:
Apollonian
Dionysian
Types
There are several types, each of which is explained in detail here. But let’s focus on just two so you can get started:
- Habit
- Continuous
Habit
The center of Maya power is in this type. With it, you will form what makes humanity progress (and regress) so much: the habit.
Every habit-type task must have a recurrence duration (how often a new instance of it must be created), you can find a complete list of them here .
I recommend that you use only the most common durations, such as daily
, weekly
,
monthly
and yearly
. More than that will probably cause confusion.
They should have an end date, since it is through this that it will be possible to define when another instance of the task will be created.
If you’re a nerd and want to know in depth how recurrence works, visit this site . Maya implements this, but disregard the commands used in the examples, since you won’t be using them.
Continuous
Continuous tasks are simpler. They are created once and will exist forever.
Maya doesn’t allow you to delete or complete them normally, you can only do so under specific conditions.
Their main use is to serve as a simple timing counter. An example of this is a standard task called “Time without specific use”, whose purpose is precisely to count the time without use. Whenever you want to count the time you spend doing something that has no start or end date, this is probably the correct type.
In the case of the control task, you cannot delete it in any way since it is a system task.
In the next chapter, you will learn about projects. See you there :) <3
