Thinking the Maya way

There are a few things you need to keep in mind before you start using Maya. Otherwise, you’ll run into a lot of unnecessary problems, since Maya isn’t just about the tool itself. That said, you might ask yourself: “If I pay for the app, how can it not be about the tool?”. And the answer is simple:

We focus on the process and the sense of community.

Humans are meant to enjoy the journey, not to focus on something distant and unreal. One of the most essential parts of Maya’s knowledge base, the Wiki, is free. We’re also meant to live in groups, which is why we have a Community. It’s free to join and chat, but some of the content we create is paid and exclusive to subscribers.

Even if you can’t afford the tool, you can still get some of what we want to share with you. When you pay for Maya, you get the combination of an amazing tool with the knowledge of how habits work, what productivity really is, and the reasons behind most of your mistakes. In other words, Maya is a combination of the software (what you’re going to buy), the wiki/blog (the source of all knowledge), and the community (a safe and evolving environment that we’re building). All of this will gradually improve depending on how quickly this project succeeds.

Tasks

Talking about the application itself, I think it is fair to say that in most of the tools you have used before finding Maya, the concept was simple. To-do lists, pomodoro, notes and basic things that are more complements than concepts in themselves — I will not tell you that any of this is good. What works and what does not work for you will be shown as your experience with Maya. Here you will learn to become truly independent, without having to impose on you what you should and should not do —. Indeed, as the app evolves, things like this will appear. But Maya’s philosophy focuses on knowing how your brain works, not on which cake recipe is the best to follow blindly.

An interesting way to think about doing things in the app is:

Everything is a task. And no task should be everything.

Sleeping is a task. Eating is a task. Studying is a task. Watching a series is a task.

The problem only starts when you think that all of this is a task. In Maya, you can have extremely detailed and assertive logs about where you are truly spending your time. Therefore, it is a gross mistake to assume that two different things can fit into the same task.

So focus first on understanding what the task you want to create represents, and then on simply executing it. This will be extremely important in the future.

Centralize

As stated in principle 3, you have total control over things. This means that you have an immense arsenal to be able to put complexity and simplicity in the same place, side by side, without one interfering with the other. Therefore, the ideal is to make Maya the center of your brain. It doesn’t matter if one thing is work and another is leisure, the goal is for all of this to be managed and only visible to you when really necessary. And that’s up to you to decide.
